Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Within Our Occupational Health System

Musculoskeletal issues are one of the most common drivers of workplace absence across the UK. Back pain, joint strain, repetitive injury and manual handling-related conditions frequently begin as manageable discomfort but develop into prolonged absence when early intervention is missed.

Within DBOCC Health’s integrated end-to-end occupational rehabilitation system, musculoskeletal concerns are identified early, assessed in context, and progressed through a structured pathway that links clinical review, rehabilitation support, and safe return to work.

Step 1: Early identification

Musculoskeletal risk is often first detected through on-site health surveillance, management referrals, or absence reviews. Where patterns of strain, discomfort, or restricted movement are identified, cases enter our rehabilitation pathway for clinical review.

This early triage stage focuses on functional impact, job demands, and risk exposure rather than symptoms alone. Where appropriate, on-site assessment is arranged to understand the working environment directly.

Step 2: Coordinated physiotherapy referral

Following clinical review, employees may be referred into physiotherapy support through a structured referral pathway.

This is not a disconnected treatment stream. Rehabilitation is coordinated alongside occupational health input, ensuring that physiotherapy supports: Functional recovery linked to actual job tasks, safety considerations in higher-risk roles, clear restrictions where required, and timely review points to monitor progress.

Step 3: Return-to-work and ongoing oversight

As recovery progresses, fitness-for-work decisions are made within the same system. Where phased return, modified duties, or temporary adjustments are needed, these are set out clearly and reviewed appropriately.

Because musculoskeletal cases remain inside the occupational rehabilitation pathway, there is continuity from first concern through to sustained return to work.

DBOCC: Supports multi-site and higher-risk environments

For organisations operating across multiple sites, musculoskeletal management often becomes inconsistent.

Within our system, the same triage criteria, clinical framework, documentation standards, and review processes apply wherever work is carried out. This provides employers with confidence that musculoskeletal rehabilitation is handled consistently and defensibly across the organisation.
